Video Highlights Savigs for Cone and Thread Fitting Users
A new video from Parker Instrumentation graphically illustrates the
enormous labour savings made possible by ground-breaking medium pressure
tube fitting technology. Titled Just two minutes of your time,
the video makes essential viewing for instrumentation engineers and
anyone involved in the specification, purchasing, and maintenance of
small-bore tubing and fittings. It compares the processes required to
assemble a 1034bar/15000PSI tube fitting using a tra- ditional cone
and thread technology, and a novel design employing familiar compression
sealing principles. Time lapse footage shows a technician taking over
15 minutes to perform the precise mechanical preparation required for
a cone and thread style of fitting while a Parker MPI compression
fitting is assembled in less than 10 seconds, simply by tightening a
nut. The integrity of the compression tube fitting assembly is then
pressure tested to 2058bar / 30,000 PSI.

Emerson Wins $9 Million in Contracts to Automate
Sunflower Electric Power Plant PlantWeb® architecture with Emersons
Ovation® expert control system to boost plant performance Emerson
Process Management announced that it has won an $8 million contract
to upgrade the control systems for Sunflower Electric Power Corp.s
Holcomb Generating Station in Kansas. The consumer-owned electric generation
and transmission utility also has awarded Emerson a $1 million contract
for asset management software, field instrumentation and services. Sunflower
Electric Power Corp. is operated by six rural electric distribution
cooperatives and serves 34 western Kansas counties. Emersons Power
& Water Solutions industry center will install its Ovation®
expert control system at the 360-megawatt, coal-fired Holcomb plant,
replacing the stations legacy Bailey and Honeywell control systems.
The Ovation system, a key technology in Emersons PlantWeb®
digital plant architecture, will manage 8,000 I/O points and provide
data acquisition and optimize, control and monitor the plants
steam supply processes, including the boiler, burner management system,
scrubber, and turbine (including start-up, rotor stress analysis and
vibration monitoring), and the balance of plant processes (including
coal handling and water treatment). To further optimize control and
monitoring of plant processes, Emersons SmartProcess® Combustion
Optimizer and SmartProcess Sootblower Optimizer software modules will
be integrated seamlessly with the power-specific control algorithms
in the Ovation systems APC (Advanced Process Control) toolkit.
The asset management software, field instrumentation and services contract
includes Emersons AMS Suite applications for predictive
maintenance of mechanical equipment and field devices, as well as HART
field devices, including Fisher® valves and FIELDVUE® valve
positioners and Rosemount® smart transmitters. Control system installation
will take place in two phases to take advantage of scheduled outages.
Phase One (Fall 2004) includes installation of control systems for the
scrubber, coal handling and flame scanners; installation of the Ovation
communication network backbone and new power supply systems. The second
phase, featuring installation of the BOP control systems, is scheduled
to take place in Spring 2006.
