Lifecycle Benefits of Advanced Process Control Applications
APC is a well-established control methodology with well-documented benefits. However, due to its relatively high cost and domain expertise requirements involved in its implementation, its use has been primarily limited to major processing units of large companies.

Competitive pressures are forcing companies to extract more value from their assets through the use of APC. Organizations like Huntsman, National Cooperative Refinery Association (NCRA), and Petro-Canada are achieving faster time-to-benefits by reducing implementation time in half.

The process industries have a vast asset-manufacturing base, the majority of which is run by simple control schemes. Although these schemes typically provide adequate quality and safety control, they do not always operate in the most economically optimal fashion.

Steve Carlson, Chair of the 802.3af Task Force, says, “Thousands of new and innovative products will emerge to take advantage of having the proven robustness and reliability of Ethernet along with power on the same connector.
